Somali leader hopes to defeat Al-shabab in few months

The Somali leader, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, is aiming to completely eradicate the al-Qaeda linked group, al-Shabab, within the next five months through a military operation.

The first phase of this offensive, which began a year ago, saw the army and local clan-based militias successfully reclaim numerous territories from al-Shabab.

The army is now preparing for a second phase of the operation, with thousands of government soldiers gathering in central Somalia for a new military campaign.

Despite the ambitious goal of eliminating the group, experts believe it might be overly optimistic due to al-Shabab's long-standing presence since the early 2000s, deep community ties, and ability to adapt to international military pressure.
