On Saturday evening, a horrific accident claimed the lives of five people at Nyakashure village along the Rukungiri-Kihihi road in Kanungu District. The crash, which occurred around 5:30 p.m., involved a trailer and a blue ISUZU ELF.
The vehicles involved in the accident were a trailer with registration number RAD 940J/RL1455 and a blue ISUZU ELF with registration number UAW 904R.
According to a police statement, the trailer was traveling from Rukungiri towards Kihihi. Upon reaching Nyakashure, the driver of the trailer veered off his lane and collided with the oncoming ISUZU ELF, which was in its correct lane.
The deceased have been identified as:
- Byamukama Fred (the driver)
- Akandwanaho Reagan
- Kyarisima Thereza
- Tumuramye Genariyo
All four victims were from Kinanira cell, Burora parish, Nyarushanje Sub-county in Rukungiri District. A fifth male adult, who remains unidentified, succumbed to his injuries later at the hospital.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, reported that the police were promptly informed about the accident. Officers visited the scene and the injured were rushed to Kihihi Health Center IV, where the fifth victim died. The bodies of the other four deceased were also taken to Kihihi Health Center IV mortuary for postmortem examinations.
