"Young Recruit Dies During UPDF Training Exercise"

A 22-year-old youth collapsed and died during a drill in Tororo District on Friday.

The Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) said Abdallah Biija was undertaking mandatory 4km run when he collapsed and lost consciousness.

The army said Biija was taken to Tororo hospital but he could not make it as he breathed his last shortly after arrival.

The deceased had travelled to Tororo from Butaleja District for the recruitment exercise.

Three days ago, Levi Okwir, from Dokolo District, collapsed during the same 4km run and was saved by  emergency medical service.

The army is undertaking a general recruitment exercise of 9,627 regular forces into Infantry forces.

The exercise commenced on July 1 and will end on July 14, is being conducted throughout the entire country covering the 135 districts and 11 cities.

World over, military drills are tough and test the endurance of recruits such that only the toughest mettle prevail.

The drills are sometimes too tough for some, leading to collapse or even death.

In 2021, 22-year-old Twaha Tondwa, from Pallisa District, collapsed and died from Kamuli Hospital after the drill run.
