Three MPs Remanded Over Budget Corruption

Three Members of Parliament have been imprisoned as a corruption investigation initiated by President Museveni progresses. The MPs, representing various districts, appeared before the Anti-Corruption Court after spending time in police custody.

The prosecution alleges that these MPs sought an improper benefit related to the Human Rights Commission’s budget. Specifically, they are accused of requesting a 20 percent advantage from the Commission's anticipated budget increase for the next financial year, asserting their influence over budget decisions.

The MPs, facing a potential 10-year sentence or a substantial fine if convicted, denied the charges. In court, their defense lawyers argued for bail, emphasizing the presumption of innocence and their stable ties, while the state attorney requested additional time to verify the bail documents and the severity of the charges.

The court's decision on the bail application is pending further verification of the provided surety details and the accused's residential information.
